We Used to Wait

So I never wrote a letter,
I never took my true heart, I never wrote it down.
So when the lights cut out,
I was left standing in the wilderness downtown.

I've spent the majority of my weekend in bed, and the entirety of the time exploring music. With a library of almost 5,000 songs, it's easy to lose sight (or hearing, rather) of the broad selection that is available. One item that has never disappointed is the Arcade Fire. Bred in Montreal, their music has an eery, yet almost uplifting feel. It's hard not to listen without sinking deep into thought, but that isn't always a bad thing.

with arms outstretched

It's 16 miles to the promised land and I promise you,
I'm doing the best I can.
Now don't fool yourself in thinking you're more than a man,
'cause you'll probably end up dead.

I visit these mountains with frequency
and I stand here with my arms up.

Now some days, they last longer than others,
but this day by the lake went too fast.
And if you want me, you better speak up- I won't wait.
So you better move fast.

bean sprout

I just got settled in my new room. Although my posters haven't touched the walls and my suitemates are nowhere to be found, I can tell that it's going to be a great home.

Letting potential grow taller than frustration, nervousness, and nonsensical events...

Falling for...

Autumn has always been my favorite season. Crisp air, fire colored forests, and weather just perfect enough to combine shorts and skirts with comfy sweaters is my dream come true. Move over *beach*, it's almost Fall.

bittersweet

So my time in NYC finally came to an end. With all of the "justifiable" stops for dessert, my last weekend was quite enjoyable. Lemon raspberry tarts, a ton (literally) of Pinkberry, and a sundae from Serendipity marked the end of my quite interesting summer (and certainly the beginning of my intense swimming and workout routine at home...)

Shipping Up to Boston

I haven't been to Boston any time recently (I believe my last adventure there occurred at the age of 3). So I was beyond excited to visit one of my closest friends and her family, as well as get a look at a new place. The cobblestone, classic architecture, and bountiful supply of cute details made Boston one of my new favorite places. I was only there for 24 hours, but if it only took that long to win me over, it sounds like I'll need another visit sometime soon!

Black Mirror

Shot by a security camera
You can't watch your own image
And also look yourself in the eye
Black Mirror,

I know a time is coming
All words will lose their meaning
Please show me something that isn't mine
But mine is the only kind that I relate to
Le miroir casse
The mirror casts mon reflet partout

escape to bear mountain

With 3 weeks left in New York, I was honestly in need of a break. Being from Ohio (and not even the country), the city air wasn't doing wonders for my unsuspecting lungs. So, what better to do than pack up and go for a hike?

Despite the feelings of what you may have missed out on, it's a good idea once in a while to forget about all of the madness that surrounds you, pack up, and just get out there.

I have yet to find out what draws you to a certain book on the library shelf. I read the inside jacket of each selection to ensure that I don't end up with 20 pounds of reading that I know I can't carry, but it's usually only the spine that has the power to bring me to a certain book to begin with. Somehow, I ended up exchanging my failed start at a (rather boring) typical novel, its cover swirled with coils and calligraphy, for a pink spine reading "Rat." The 60s inspired girl on the cover was interesting enough, so that was that.

I don't know what it was the simplicity of the writing, the honesty of Rat, or the strange give and take between a seemingly happy upbringing and the harsh reality of the grown up world. It wasn't a book that changed my life or made me smile after reading the last line, but Rat, despite the title, charmed me just enough.

All on the Fourth of July

So I haven't really figured out what one does on the 4th in NYC. I've heard quite a bit of mention of Jersey and the Hamptons, but that becomes complicated when you yourself are from Ohio. I'm guessing I won't find myself at a backyard bbq, swimming, and relaxing on grassy hill as the sun sets and the sky lights up with fireworks, but at least I can rest assured there will be plenty of hot dogs in the city.

Oh the smell of the smoke as we lay on the land
And the feeling of finding my heart in my hand
And the tiny tin voice of the radio band singing
"Love must stand"
Love forever and ever must stand
All on the fourth of July.

And high up above, my eyes could clearly see the Statue of Liberty, sailing away to sea.

Friday and Saturday quickly (and unfortunately) morphed into Sunday. 90 degrees, humidity that I didn't know was possible, and a horribly disappointing lunch made the precursor to Monday less than desirable. But later that evening, things cleared up.

I visited Bryant Park, the place that I hear about, dream about, and have frequented (through style.com) many times. The park itself, fashion not included, was spectacular. If i could choose one word, I would go with lush... The dark green leaves and sprinkling of purple flowers was something out of a fairy tale. So I'm definitely quite excited to go back (weather permitting, this time...)

Later that evening, I joined some old family friends for dinner. We went to the top of the Empire State Building. As tourist-y as it is, it's something that absolutely has to be done. The view is great (obviously...) but it was also an incredibly calming experience. Being wrapped in cool winds and quiet hushes, high above the heat and clamor of the city, was an unexpected contrast, but certainly worth experiencing.

Still, tomorrow's going to be another working day,
And I'm trying to get some rest.
That's all, I'm just trying to get some rest.
